Day 2 - Language pride
In Gothenburg, I noticed how locals carried their language with quiet pride. They spoke Swedish to one another with ease, switching to English only when someone couldn’t follow—always gently, always politely.
It wasn’t about excluding, but about belonging. They held their roots firmly while still opening a window for others to step in. The balance felt graceful, like an embrace that says, “You are welcome, but this is who we are.”
It made me wonder how often we rush to abandon what is ours—our words, our stories—just to fit into a wider world. Perhaps true confidence is not in replacing, but in carrying what is ours with tenderness.
It reminded me of how, back home, many hesitate to speak in their mother tongue, thinking it less “modern.” Yet in Gothenburg, I saw pride woven into language like a thread that kept the fabric of community strong.
What language within us—be it words, values, or ways of living—are we still afraid to speak with pride?
